Turtle Hatcheries

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s most important breeding spots for the endangered Sea Turtles.

The hatchery buys turtle eggs from fishermen, in an attempt to encourage them from poaching & selling the eggs for food. Hatchery care for newborn turtles until they are ready to be released back into the ocean. This is a marvelous experience that some lucky visitors may have the opportunity to do it themselves first hand!

The sandy beaches are utilized by several of the marine turtles for laying their eggs. Sometimes visitors can rarely observe turtles laying their eggs at night on the beach. The newborn turtles are being cared for until they are ready to be released back to the ocean.

Habaraduwa, Hikkaduwa, Kosgoda and Madu River are some places that you can visit to see these new born Turtles.

The commonest of these are the Loggerheads and the Leathery Turtle while the Green Turtle is a less common visitor.
